Dickens Comes to Town!
On Saturday, December 8th, the Covington Square travels back in time! Not only does it, as always, reflect the charm of a lovely Southern Town with so many shops and places to explore, but for just this day, the merchants and some of the townspeople will be dressed in a costume of the Victorian era. Leave the hustle and bustle of today’s world behind, enjoy and explore the feel of a legendary time gone by.
They ask that you “Join us for a Victorian-era Christmas celebration on our Historic Covington Square!” They even will allow anyone who would like to dress the part and truly put yourself back into the time they are celebrating to please do so! There will be refreshments, horse-drawn carriages, carolers, shopping and such a wonderful time in Covington!
This year, the Market on the Square will be open in the Gateway Baptist Church, the former Chamber Center on the Square. There will be twenty vendors set up inside, along with hot chocolate and hot cider prepared by the members of the Church. [10 am - 6 pm] Once you are warm again, come outside for a lovely carriage ride around the historical route, and don’t forget to get your photo taken with Santa in the Gazebo on the Square before he leaves for the North Pole promptly at 6:30 pm. [2:30pm - 6:30pm]
Another great place to warm up for children, and adults, will be the Chamber of Commerce office.
Every hour, on the hour, they may come to hear a Christmas story being read by a chamber volunteer. [10 am - 5 pm] During the day, you will want to stop in at the shops around the Square. Not only will you be able to find unique specialty items, home accessories, jewelry, and many other one-of-a-kind gifts on display, but a friendly competition is going on between all of the merchants. You will get to vote on their facebook page to determine who had the best costumes, and a simple ‘like’ will be your vote. You will get a chance to preview some of the costumes in the Christmas parade on December 4th in Downtown Covington.
The Dickens event will conclude at the end of the day on December 8th, with the lighting of the Covington Christmas Tree on the Historic Downtown Covington Square at 7:00 pm. The magic of Dickens will be put away until next year, but the peaceful, happy place that is the Downtown Covington Square will be available anytime for you to take advantage of its grace and charm and to get away from everyday life!
Watch the Dickens Christmas facebook page for more developments and additions to the schedule of events. More events will be added to make your stroll around the Square even more exciting and ‘in character” as they are arranged.
